How chip shortage is forcing the world’s biggest automobile company to shut factories

After the end of the second phase of the coronavirus crisis, the demand for cars in the country is increasing continuously. But due to the shortage of semiconductors, the companies cannot react to the expected target.

Toyota, one of the biggest vehicle manufacturers globally, is also affected by the chip shortage. The global chip shortage has earlier forced to stall Toyota’s 27 production lines in 14 factories worldwide in September. The auto manufacturer giant has now extended stoppages at some factories in Japan due to a supply shortage. The company claims that the halts on production will directly affect about 14,000 vehicles in December.

Earlier, the company said that it hopes to return to average production for the first time in seven months in December. But the production at the factories was halted, and the suspension is expected to continue for now. The company claimed to lose 3,500 vehicles due to the chip shortage. In addition, it will keep its target to produce 9 million vehicles worldwide during the financial year ending on March 31.

The production cuts which have affected the Lexus models and its Land Cruiser are still trying to make up for the production lost due to the supply-chain disruptions in Malaysia and Vietnam.

To recall, the Japanese automaker revealed that it produced 627,452 vehicles in October, down from 845,107 units a year earlier. Toyota said last month that it would cut global production for a third time this year as the worldwide shortage of automotive microchips continues to bite.

According to the automobile industry body SIAM, deliveries of small cars and sedans stood at 64,235 units in September. It has been 61% weaker than 1.6 lakh units in September last year. If we talk about SUV and UV, their wholesale sales have fallen by 9% to 87,720 units compared to 96,633 units in September last year.

Netflix vs Disney+ Hotstar vs Amazon Prime Video: Which one is worth your money and why?

The explosion of streaming services has made it quite confusing for the viewers to pick one to invest in, especially when the subscription costs are quite high for many. While everyone needs a piece of the pie but are they really worth investing in? Well, there are three major things that matter the most while choosing a video streaming service: content, features and budget.

Giving a price cut at a time when rivals like Amazon Prime Video increased its subscription cost was an excellent move by Netflix to get the full attention of the consumers in India. For the unversed, the new mobile Netflix subscription cost is Rs 149 per month, down from Rs 199. The basic plan is now priced at Rs 199 per month, down from Rs 499 and the premium plan is priced at Rs 649 per month, down from Rs 749. High subscription cost was one of the major reasons why it was difficult to recommend the platform to users. Although its prices are still high as compared to other streaming services, the recent price cut is now making a compelling case for Netflix.

Image: Pixabay

As for content, I think it was majorly the Netflix shows and movies that made headlines this year. Not to mention Money Heist, Squid Games, Lucifer, Sex Education, The Witcher all these binge-worthy shows are available on Netflix. The streaming service also offers a healthy mix of movies, shows, documentaries, K-dramas, and so on. One of the best things about the platform is that it maintains its momentum and keeps on refreshing the content every other week.

Not only this, Netflix lets you can create up to five individual user profiles per subscription. For the unversed, Netflix-compatible devices are smartphones, tablets, computers, smart TVs, TV streaming devices and set-top boxes. The US-based streaming service offers content in SD, HD and 4K resolution. In terms of features, the UI of Netflix is quite user-friendly. Some of these features include “Popular Picks for You”, “Continue Watching”, “Trending Picks for You”, and so on.

In my personal opinion, Netflix is the best option for you if you are a binging enthusiast like me, but I will understand why some of you might beg to differ. I mean, Netflix does have a few drawbacks. I mean no Harry Potter? Only a couple of Marvel movies! and of course, no Marvel’s original show (at least not the new ones)? Well, this might give you major FOMO and if that is something that you cannot miss out on, I think you should choose Disney+ Hotstar.

Disney+ Hotstar’s partnership with Pixar and Marvel is the biggest convincing factor why people choose the platform. However, you need to weigh your priorities because obviously, you will still be missing out on some of the major shows like Stranger Things, You, Sex Education and so on.

Amazon Prime Video on the other hand has a few reasons why one might think of it as a good option. What is its major highlight you ask? Harry Potter! All the new Fantastic Beast saga movies are available just on Prime Video. While it does have some good shows like The Wheel of Time, Young Sheldon, Jack Ryan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Mirzapur, The Family Man and so on but personally, I still find myself opening the Prime Video app once in a blue moon.

While one might still be convinced by the content offered by the platform, Prime Video has increased its prices in India. Hence, making consumers re-think if they really want it. To be fair, Amazon does offer a handful of services along with the streaming service, but to choose it just because of its streaming service is not a smart decision in my opinion.

It all comes down to users’ priority and pocket. While Netflix seems like a content-rich platform with a reasonable cost at the moment which is what an average viewer is looking for, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar have their own perks.

For Hindi movie buffs on a budget, streaming services like Zee5, SonyLiv and more are also good options to choose from.

Google Maps is testing a new ‘Dock to bottom’ feature: Report

Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Google Maps that will allow users to dock locations at the bottom of the map page. This feature is likely to be called “Dock bottom”. According to a report by Search Engine Roundtable, users will see a “dock to bottom” button in the Google Maps app that will let them quickly locate the saved or the docked location on the map. This feature can be useful for businesses to help users locate a specific place precisely on Google Maps.

Right now, the Google Maps app and the desktop site show only one information panel on the left side. The report further reveals that the docking feature will also come with a close option. Upon clicking the close option, the dock will hide from the Google Maps page. The feature might also help users plan a trip and dock specific local businesses they want to visit without any hassel. However, it is not yet confirmed if or when will this feature roll out for the users.

The ‘dock to bottom’ feature testing was reported on Twitter recently.

Last month, Google Maps had added a new feature that could inform users about the live busyness trends of a specific place. The Area Busyness feature is designed to help users plan their travel according to the crowdedness of a place, given that we are still in the middle of a pandemic. The newly introduced Directory tab of Google Maps allows users to navigate through famous public places like airports, malls and transit stations.

Additionally, Google Maps for iOS has received the much-awaited Dark Mode. While Google added the greyscale interface on the platform in August some outlets like The Verge cite to have witnessed the floater on Maps since September. Although the general mass wasn’t able to access the feature back then.

OnePlus rolls out a new Android 12 based OxygenOS update for OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro

OnePlus has rolled out a new update of OxygenOS based on Android 12 for OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro users. The company has announced that the new update will resolve issues and fix bugs that were introduced in the previous update. Notably, this previous update was rolled out just last week, but the company had to suspend it as users reported errors, bugs and more issues.

As per a blog by OnePlus, “In this build, we concentrated on solving the issues that were most reported recently, including the failure to connect to the mobile data in certain scenarios, phone notifications not being visible, freeze issues, some display problems, etc. This update has reached a few users already and will continue to roll out incrementally.”

The latest version is marked as C.39 whereas the earlier version was C.36. Users who did not update to C.36 are advised to wait before updating to the latest version so that they know if it is stable and bug-free or not. According to OnePlus, the most reported issues of the previous update include the failure to connect to mobile data, phone notifications were not visible, freezing of the system UI, display issues and more.

According to OnePlus, issues like autofill in Google Chrome, the temporary lack of access to the Ultra HD 48M / AUX camera on GCam will be fixed “in the follow-up update plan”.

Just like always, this update will be available to users in a phased manner so some OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro users will have to wait for the update for at least a few days.

New features and improvements

With the update, the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro users will get access to all Android 12 features such as — hibernation, microphone and camera indicators, approximate location permission, and others.

Additionally, the new OxygenOS update brings more adjustable levels for systemwide dark mode, improvements to Cards on the Shelf, Work-Life Balance 2.0, switching layouts with a pinch gesture, improvements to image previews, and much more.

WhatsApp brings new features to keep stalkers away. Check how it works

WhatsApp has been the most used messaging application for a very long time. While it provides a lot of convenience to the end user, it also has some features that can be exploited by malicious actors and stalkers. The ‘Last Seen’ status and ‘Online’ status have been exploited by some third-party apps to track the online whereabouts.

Some users may have noticed that they are not able to see the ‘Online’ status or the ‘Last Seen’ status of the users they haven’t chatted with in the past. According to a report by WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp beta features, the instant messaging application has integrated new features in order to stop third party applications from gaining access to time logs.

How can ‘Last Seen’ and ‘Online’ status be used for stalking

Some third party apps from Google Play Store on Android and Apple App Store on iOS can access data from the app to log ‘online’ status time and ‘Last Seen’ time. WhatsApp has now introduced some safeguards to stop such apps from accessing such data.

Even when the ‘Last seen’ status is active on both accounts, users won’t be able to view it until and unless there has been some chat history. The online status will also not show up. The app has assured that this new limitation won’t create any hindrance in chats with friends, family and businesses who have been communicating with the user.

In response to a query WhatsApp Support stated, “To improve the privacy and security of our users, we’re making it harder for people you don’t know and haven’t chatted with from seeing your last seen and online presence on WhatsApp.

This will not change anything between you and your friends, family, and businesses who you know or have previously messaged.”

In case, you are still not able to see the Last seen or Online status, your contact has either stopped sharing their status with everyone or has allowed only some specific users to view their information.

Google Android 12 for TV rolling out with some much-needed features: Check details

In the month of May, Google released the first beta of Android 12 OS for TV. The third beta was announced in the month of July. The final release is now rolling out to users and there are enhancements to various aspects of the operating system including security, privacy, cosmetics and frame rates.

Here’s a look at what is new with Android 12 for smart TVs

Privacy and Security

The process of cross-viewing, casting screens and other smart features are getting easier with every new OS update. However, this also invites easier ways for users to fall prey to surveillance, privacy violations and even scams. Now Android 12 for TVs has introduced indicators for the use for cameras and microphone.

Users will now see any time apps are accessing the microphone or camera by showing an indicator on the TV screen. For better visibility of recent app accesses to microphone and camera, users can visit their privacy settings on TV.

Additionally, two new global privacy settings are now available, allowing the user to easily toggle access to the microphone or camera. When those toggles are disabled, apps will be unable to access microphone audio and camera video.

Smoother visuals

Users can now access smoother visuals with the help of a ‘Match content frame rate’ feature. When the frame rate of a video doesn’t match the refresh rate of the display, users may experience unpleasant motion judder artifacts from frame rate conversion. This is especially visible during slow panning shots. The new feature allows users to select the new feature that will reduce the frame drops substantially.

User Interface

4K UI Support: Android TV brings two new additions to the UI that help provide users with a richer visual experience on high performance devices. Android TV OS now officially supports UI rendering at 4K resolution on compatible devices.

Background blurs: Background blurring using RenderEffect (for in-app blurs) and WindowManager (for cross-window blurs) can now be used to easily enhance the visual separation of different UI layers.

Sony PlayStation 5, PS5 Digital to go on sale today: How to get your hands on one

The Sony PlayStation 5 will go on sale today on various online and offline platforms. The PS5 is still a hot property even almost one year after its global launch. India started off sales much later and the supply is still not being able to match up with the demand. The semiconductor shortage could be to blame. However, buyers have a chance to pre-order the new generation gaming console today. There has been a long break since the last restock that happened in the month of October. More buyers are expected to try their luck at pre-booking the gaming console today.

The new PS5 will be sold via Amazon, Flipkart, Sony Center, Croma, Vijay Sales, Game Loot, Games The Shop, Prepaid Gamer Card and Reliance Digital. Both PS5 and PS5 Digital will be available to purchase today. The standard version with a Blu-Ray player has been priced at Rs 49,990 and the Digital edition of the console is priced at Rs 39,990.

How to make sure that you get your PS5 pre-booked

-This is the tenth time the PS5 has received a restock in India and the demand is still pretty high. Expect units to get sold out within minutes if not seconds.
-The best option is to involve more people in order to maximize the possibility of booking the console
-Try both desktop and mobile applications of e-commerce websites. If one fails, the other will still be an option
-If doing the booking alone, make sure to keep multiple tabs open in advance with separate sellers
-Stay logged in these e-commerce websites and also make sure to have saved all the necessary payment information along with the address. This will ensure a speedy checkout.
-Some buyers might experience lag when trying to make the booking. The best way to steer clear from it is to switch to a reliable WiFi connection, preferably at home.
-Ensure that not many devices are connected to the WiFi or are streaming heavy videos at the time of booking.

Despite all the efforts, you need to understand that the number of people trying to book the PS5 will be very high and there are a lot of variables in place which could lead to a failed attempt.

Moto Edge X30 image appear online, confirmed to get 144Hz display

Motorola seems to be following its rival brands’ footsteps, as the company teased its upcoming premium smartphone, similar to what OnePlus did in the past. Moto Edge X30 is expected to debut this week, and ahead of its launch General Manager for the smartphones division at Lenovo China shared an image of the device revealing its design.

The new Moto phone is rumoured to equip the brand new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 premium chipset. The phone is expected to get a 144Hz display. Here’s all you need to know about the new Moto Edge X30 smartphone.

Moto Edge X30 design revealed

The Lenovo-owned brand officially shared a live image of the Moto Edge X30 that shows the smartphone featuring slim bezels with a punch-hole cutout at the centre for accommodating the front camera. The top and bottom bezels appear to be slightly thick than the side bezels. The image only shows the front fascia, except for a button on the left edge of the frame which is believed to be the Google Assistant key.

Moto Edge X30 specifications

Motorola didn’t entirely share the design details of its premium phone. However, Motorola did share a short clip on their official Weibo account which confirms the phone to arrive with a 144Hz display and HDR10+ compatibility. The display will run 10-bit colours.

Past leaks suggested the phone to feature a 6.67-inch FHD+ OLED display. The phone is tipped to launch on December 9 with the premium Snapdragon mobile platform which means that the Moto Edge X30 will be the world’s first smartphone to have this chip onboard. The flagship processor could be paired with up to 16GB RAM and 256GB internal storage.

The device could get a triple rear camera system comprising of a 50-megapixel primary sensor with OIS, a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies, it could get a 60-megapixel camera in the punch-hole cutout with 4K video recording capability.

The new Moto phone will be showcased in China on December 9, and it will go on sale on December 15. The phone is rumoured to launch as Moto Edge 30 Ultra outside China, although the company hasn’t shared any specifics on the global launch yet. That said, Moto is prepping to launch its mid-ranger Moto G51 5G in India on December 10. The handset will be sold exclusively via its e-retail partner Flipkart’s website.

Car thieves are using Apple AirTags to steal vehicles: How to keep your cars safe

Apple AirTags were launched to help users track their belongings in a better way. However, it seems that thieves have managed to make use of the technology to their benefit. A recent report has suggested that a syndicate in Canada is using the Apple AirTags to target and ultimately steal luxury cars.

The York Regional Police in Canada has warned the residents of their area to be wary of thieves trying to steal luxury cars using Apple AirTags. Officers at the precinct have released a statement explaining how the thefts are being done and how car owners can safeguard their vehicle from thieves.

To vote for more categories, click here

The police has traced five incidents of car-stealing where thieves were found to be using Apple AirTags to track vehicles and then steal them. The tags were placed in out-of-sight areas of the target vehicles when they are parked in public places like malls or parking lots. Thieves then track the targeted vehicles to the victim’s residence, where they are stolen from the driveway.

According to the statement by the police, the thieves typically use tools like screwdrivers to enter the vehicles through the driver or passenger door. However, they still manage to bypass the alarm system. Once inside, an electronic device, typically used by mechanics to reprogram the factory setting, is connected to the onboard diagnostics port below the dashboard and programs the vehicle to accept a key the thieves have brought with them. Once the new key is programmed, the vehicle will start and the thieves drive it away.

Here are some safety tips shared by the York Police department to keep thieves from tracking and stealing cars using AirTags or other similar tagging devices.

-If possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage. Most vehicles are stolen from a driveway
-Use a steering wheel lock (or a gear lock). It will also act as a visible deterrent
-Install a lock on the data port. This simple device can be purchased online and blocks access to the computer port where the thieves gain access to reprogram the vehicle’s keys
-Consider using a surveillance system at home and ensure cameras are properly placed and functioning for day and night time use.
-Inspect your vehicle regularly and call police if you notice any suspicious potential tracking devices

Samsung’s Push To Leverage Artificial Intelligence on Display at RSNA 2021

Samsung Electronics will showcase its premium diagnostic imaging solutions in ultrasound, digital radiography and mobile computed tomography at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2021 Annual Meeting from November 28 to December 2.

“This has been a momentous year for Samsung. We have worked to advance our solutions by leveraging high computing power and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies,” said David Legg, Vice President, Digital Radiography and Ultrasound, NeuroLogica. “We will be deploying AI features in each of our products to provide benefits to healthcare professionals and patients alike.”

Ultrasound

At the event, Samsung will showcase its new V8, which is a high-end ultrasound system that provides enhanced image quality, usability and convenience for ultrasound professionals. Crystal Architecture™ is the core of the V8’s image clarity and penetration and is built upon the combination of innovative beamforming (CrystalBeam™), sophisticated image processing (CrystalLive™) and advanced S-Vue Single Crystal Transducers™ to produce clear, uniform and high-resolution images.

The feature-packed device includes two new AI functions, one being NerveTrack™, which detects nerves and provides nerve location information in real-time to anesthesiologists and expert practitioners. The function is designed to provide users with accurate nerve detection, faster image processing and better workflow support. The second AI function is UterineAssist™, which detects tissue changes and assists the user in taking measurements of the uterus. With these and other new tools, the V8 delivers a new level of versatility and value to a wide range of diagnostic medical ultrasound departments.

Samsung has also worked to advance its ultrasound solutions for women’s health. Recently, the Hera W9 and W10 received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(K) clearance for its new AI functions, which gives the operator the ability to measure anatomical structures and analyze imaging, providing useful information to aid diagnosis.

New features include:

  • HeartAssist™: A deep learning-based function that provides classification of ultrasound images to display measurements. The feature recognizes various views and proposes caliper placements and corresponding measurements allowing users to save time with measurement proposals and increase examination efficiency by reducing keystrokes.
  • ViewAssist™: A deep learning-based function that classifies ultrasound images to deliver key scanning views and provides annotations. The feature recognizes a range of views, proposes corresponding anatomy annotations and initiates measurements.
  • BiometryAssist™: An automatic solution for biometric measurement that can be modified by the user. It enables users to measure fetal growth parameters with one click while maintaining exam consistency.

Digital Radiography

Samsung is also showcasing its premium digital mobile X-ray, the AccE GM85, which delivers unparalleled performance and gives users better diagnostic confidence while improving workflow. Recently, Samsung received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Auto Lung Nodule Detection (ALND) tool, which can be utilized in the AccE GC85A and in other systems. The ALND is provided as an on-device computer-assisted detection (CADe) software that uses an AI algorithm to detect pulmonary nodules between 10 and 30mm in size.1

The benefits of ALND include:

  • Aids the user in the diagnostic process by indicating the location of suspected lung nodules on chest X-ray images (posteroanterior chest radiographs).
  • Offers the option (Autorun) to automatically perform nodule detection immediately after chest X-ray imaging in addition to PACS transmission options to suit the hospital environment, both of which simplify the user’s workflow.
  • The ALND has been clinically verified by multiple university hospitals and has been approved with a sensitivity of 80% or more.2 As part of Samsung’s commitment to advancing diagnostic radiology using AI, Samsung will expand the uses of the chest CADe solution and continue improving diagnostic accuracy and workflow.

Computed Tomography

Also featured at RSNA is the OmniTom® Elite – a mobile computed tomography (CT) scanner that delivers high-quality non-contrast CT, CT angiography and CT perfusion scans at point-of-care. The OmniTom Elite CT boasts a small footprint and high-resolution image quality. The advancements of the scanner help to optimize diagnostic confidence, speed and workflow across departments, such as neurosurgery, pediatric imaging, critical care, diagnostic radiology and more.

Earlier this year, NeuroLogica announced that the OmniTom Elite with Photon Counting Detector (PCD) technology will be piloted by Massachusetts General Hospital, bringing CT imaging to the patient’s point-of-care. Pending FDA 510(k) clearance, the hospital is testing the OmniTom Elite with PCD to monitor post-trauma and post-surgical patients.

The OmniTom Elite’s ability to provide versatile, real-time mobile imaging enables healthcare providers to administer point-of-care CT to critical patients without the need to transport them to a separate department. The mobile unit will decrease the time it takes to diagnose and initiate treatment for patients in the ICU. During the pilot stage for the OmniTom Elite with PCD, Massachusetts General Hospital will guide best practices and evaluate use cases for the novel system.
